Columbia Summer Session: An Opportunity to Experience—and Learn

The 2022 Columbia Summer Session is underway. While exploring classes across fifty subject areas, students can also take advantage of unique co-curricular and social events happening throughout the summer, on campus and off. Concerts, faculty-guided excursions and events, as well as a special series for the career-minded to hone their interview and job-hunting skills, await.

The Summer Mix and Mingle takes place on July 6. It’s an opportunity to meet and connect with students across Columbia College, School of Professional Studies, School of General Studies, and international students from around the globe. This is a social event that will have giveaways, a photo booth, food, and music, while giving you the chance to mingle and make new friends.

There are several curated Columbia faculty-led lectures open to all students this summer. On July 30, Professors Paul Olsen and Jonathan Weiner will lead an unforgettable discussion on the history of dinosaurs, their relevance today, and the importance of scientific research and its relation to our understanding of the origins of life. The talk, Do Dinosaurs Still Hold Dominion?, will be followed by a screening of Jurassic World: Dominion. On August 2, Columbia Business School Professor Jack McGourty will be in conversation with Mansueto Ventures CEO Stephanie Mehta for Thinking Like an Entrepreneur, a discussion on the many dimensions of entrepreneurship—commercial, social, and sustainable.

The Sounds of Summer Fest returns on August 9. The evening features new artists from NYC working across multiple genres, including CILLA, 79.5, Juice, and Pom Pom Squad. The event will have great music, giveaways, and snacks.

The Summer Career Design Workshop Series is a new offering for the Summer Session. The first event in the series is a Career Design Workshop on July 12. This workshop will feature career coaching, from the interview process to resume writing, as well as social media guidance and the opportunity to take a professional headshot. The second event in the series will be Interviewing Skills for Career Growth on July 14. In this workshop, Dr. Steve Safier, Director of Columbia’s M.S. in Human Capital Management program, will teach students how to ace the interview process, so they can set themselves apart from the pack and land the job they want. At the LinkedIn Headshots event on August 3, a photographer will offer students professional headshots, an integral part of any professional’s social media presence. On August 4, join SPS Senior Associate Dean of Administrative Affairs and Communications Louise Rosen for Build Your Brand. The session will help job seekers and career pivoters to consider how to develop and influence public perception to elevate credibility and authority in their industry of choice.
