Sustainability Management program graduate Catarina Carvalho, Arup’s associate for Americas East Cities Planning and coleader for Design Service, has been named to ENR’s National Top 20 Under 40 Young Professionals list. Engineering News-Record (ENR) is an industry trade publication that “reports on the top design firms, both architects and engineers, and the top construction companies as well as projects in the United States and around the world.” The winners were selected from nearly 600 nominees from all 50 states, Washington, D.C., and Puerto Rico.
Carvalho was cited for her exceptional industry portfolio and rapid professional growth in the design and construction field. ENR also accounted for the amount of time that award winners spent serving their communities. Carvalho, for her part, was actively involved in SPS mentorship at the Earth Institute and Career Design Lab.
“As one of the first generations of sustainability professionals,” she said, “I do believe we have an important role to play in combining science and strategy to better understand and act on climate change, social equity, and economic opportunity.”
Her advice for current SPS students? “Staying connected to the SPS community is crucial,” she said. “I accelerated my involvement with SPS and made time to support the community despite how busy we all are. This is the time to make a difference.”
Students in the Master of Science in Sustainability Management program learn policy and management tools to help organizations and governments address environmental impacts and risks, pollution control, and remediation. The program prioritizes the protection of ecological systems while at the same time addressing socioeconomic factors. Courses are designed and led by leading academics, researchers, and practitioners, and include pressing topics such as greenhouse gas emissions, environmental infrastructure, economics, and quantitative analysis.
"In New York City, most of our greenhouse gases are generated from our built environment,” said Steve Cohen, director of the Sustainability Management program. “Since the SUMA program began in 2010, this area has been a priority for us."
Carvalho will be featured in the January issue of ENR New York. In addition, an in-depth ENR feature will be published next year that “will showcase the 2023 winners and their perspectives on issues affecting the construction industry today.”
The Columbia University M.S. in Sustainability Management provides students cutting-edge policy and management tools they can use to help public and private organizations and governments address environmental impacts and risks, pollution control, and remediation to achieve sustainability. The program is customized for working professionals and is offered as both a full- and part-time course of study.
