A Special Message from The Dean

The COVID-19 pandemic has pushed us to summon our best selves. I am incredibly proud of how the School of Professional Studies (SPS) community has, collectively, risen to that challenge.

As we adjust to the new normal of physical/social distancing and remote learning and work, many of our colleagues at SPS are sharing their insights and experiences—as students and professionals—to help us all navigate these unprecedented times.

  • The Dean’s Office has taken a number of actions to keep our students, faculty, and staff informed and connected, including the formation of a COVID-19 Task Force and hosting regular, virtual Town Halls. We are also currently producing new virtual episodes of Talks@Columbia, featuring professional advice from executive leaders across sectors. In addition, I share my recommendations for organizational strategy, virtual team management, and reskilling in my weekly Forbes column. Remote work presents real challenges, but there are strategies and tactics that leaders can implement today, whether their organization’s shift is temporary or long-lasting.
  • SPS Students are creating content around actionable insights for those pursuing professional and academic endeavors during these uncommon times. I will continue to share these stories on LinkedIn and the SPS COVID-19 Information and Insights hub.
  • Our Faculty are esteemed scholar-practitioners across a range of disciplines and professions. They continue to share best practices for institutions, businesses, and individuals seeking guidance on pivoting and optimizing operations. Visit the SPS COVID-19 Information and Insights hub for their real-time insights on topics ranging from human capital management to digital transformation.

This is an evolving situation, but we are in it together. I would like to thank the SPS community for their agility and collaborative spirit during this time. Let us continue to connect and innovate.

I encourage you to share questions, thoughts, and concerns by emailing SharewithSPS [[at]] columbia [[dot]] edu (SharewithSPS[at]columbia[dot]edu).

Sincerely,

jw

Dean and Professor
