Rich Brown is an educator and consultant to nonprofit organizations. His nonprofit career spans 31 years and has involved fundraising, leadership, and management as well as teaching. Prior to starting his consulting practice in 2014 Mr. Brown served as an adjunct – and later full-time – visiting professor of philanthropy and fundraising at New York University. He continues to teach at NYU and teaches in Columbia University’s Master’s Program in Nonprofit Management. His courses include Management for Nonprofit Organizations, Nonprofit Board Governance, and Concepts and Practices in Fundraising.
Mr. Brown began his nonprofit career in 1987 at New York University after almost a decade with Grumman Aerospace Corporation, where he was part of a team that created training programs for the U.S. Navy. From 1989-91 he served as Director of Corporate and Foundation Giving and at AFS Intercultural Programs. During almost ten years with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital he held several positions, including Area Director, responsible for all field fundraising in the eastern United States.
Mr. Brown served as Vice President of Institutional Advancement for SUNY College at Old Westbury (2001-04) and Executive Director of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation's New York City Chapter (2004-06). From 2006-12, Mr. Brown served as Vice President of Major Gifts and a member of the senior management team at Autism Speaks. He led a team of major gift officers and partnered with board members in raising money from individuals, corporations, and foundations.
In his consulting practice Mr. Brown has served as lead consultant for the Seatuck Environmental Association. Among the organizations he has provided training to are the Union for Reform Judaism, member schools of the Historically Black Colleges and Universities, Borough of Manhattan Community College, Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of New Jersey, Rescue Mission, Children’s Aid Society, and Amnesty International. Mr. Brown is a board member of the New York City Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals. He was General Chair of Fundraising Day in New York 2016 and 2017. He is past president of the National Voluntary Health Agencies of New York (today known as Combined Health Charities). He is a frequent presenter at regional conferences.
