Poornima (Poonam) Prasad

Lecturer; President, Prasad Consulting & Research

Poornima (Poonam) Prasad is President of Prasad Consulting & Research, a New York City-based fundraising consulting firm that has served hundreds of nonprofits, many of them multiple times, for 25 years. Clients include U.S.-based and international charities with operating budgets ranging from $50,000 to $2.5 billion. Services offered by Prasad Consulting & Research (PCR) include advanced research, special event strategy, audits of prospect research departments and development offices, major gift and capital campaigns, and staff and board training.

Prasad is a pioneer in helping organizations craft major donor strategies for individuals and groups with differing cultural values and sensitivities. Projects have included campaigns targeted specifically to African-American, Chinese, Dutch-American, Hispanic, Scandinavian, South Asian, Sephardic, gay and lesbian, elderly, and female populations. In conducting research, PCR uses a host of premium, fee-based, online databases as well as public records and the firm’s proprietary archives. The firm is not affiliated with any database screening services and is truly independent in recommending research resources and products to clients.

She currently serves on the Board of the New York City Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) and the Giving Institute: Leading Consultants to Nonprofits. Every year since 2000, Prasad has also Co-Chaired the Research Track for AFP's Fundraising Day in New York, the largest one-day conference on philanthropy in the world. She is a former President of Women in Development, New York (WID) and a former board member of the international board of the Association of Professional Researchers for Advancement (APRA).

Prasad has been on the faculty of New York University's Heyman Center for Philanthropy and Fundraising for almost 15 years. She is also a frequent guest lecturer at meetings and workshops hosted by nonprofit and professional organizations such as the New York Women’s Foundation, RWJBarnabas Health, the American Friends of the Louvre, the American India Foundation (AIF), the United Negro College Fund, the American Association of Museums (AAM), the Association of Development Officers and all of those previously mentioned above.

She has previously worked in advertising, journalism, and public relations in India, Jamaica, South Korea, Hong Kong, and the U.S. and has served several nonprofits in the U.S. and overseas as a board member and volunteer.
