Francisco Pineda

Lecturer in the Discipline of Construction Administration; Academic Director, MS Construction Administration

Francisco X. Pineda is Academic Program Director and Lecturer for the Master of Science in Construction Administration at Columbia University. In his eighteen-year career he has worked on all aspects of the development cycle—investment, development, and construction. He has led and turned-around property development companies and construction projects, as well as businesses in hospitality, building materials, and food & beverage. Following an early career in corporate strategy at Hess as well as investment banking and private equity at Merrill Lynch, he was engaged to lead one of the Middle East’s largest corporate recovery initiatives working alongside Shearman & Sterling and Moelis & Co on restructuring a $1.6 billion real estate portfolio. The engagement included the completion and operation of a 410-key luxury hotel on the Palm (Jumeirah Zabeel Saray), serving as a board member of The Light Group, a $100 million food & beverage operator across MGM’s Las Vegas properties, and the work-out of contractor and creditor liabilities across the portfolio. He is an investor and advisor to several tech/start-ups in the construction, hospitality and property sectors, such as Knotel, Voyage Control, onTarget (, Boost-Inn, Sembient, SimpleLabs (acquired by ZocDoc), and Appetito24 (acquired by Delivery Hero). In addition, he serves as an U.S. Navy (Reserves) officer and more recently, in his programmatic and faculty roles at Columbia University, his research and teaching interests include workforce research and practice-based workshop initiative focused on improving access, training, and tracking of MWBE (Veteran, Disabled, and Local) contractors in NYC along with field research, knowledge, and pedagogy in construction and urban systems. 

Francisco teaches the Capstone Project, Construction Project Management, Advanced Project Management, Development & Construction, and Independent Study.
