American Language Program Faculty Conference Presentations

At the 2017 TESOL International Convention in Seattle, Washington, March 21-24, attended by 6,000 ESL instructors, ALP Senior Lecturer Dr. Shelley A. Saltzman, who teaches English for Graduate Legal Study to Columbia LL.M students, took part in a panel on English for Specific Purposes with colleagues from Georgetown University Law Center and Boston University. This presentation was recorded and selected for inclusion in the 2017 TESOL Highlights package. In addition, she co-ran a workshop on “Legal Language: Strategies for Effective Communication in Law School.”

Lecturer Alan Kennedy held an exhibitor session for Pearson publishing entitled “Critical Thinking Done Right: A Full-Pyramid Approach” in which he offered concrete suggestions for activities that help develop students’ thinking skills. Over 150 people attended his session. Lecturer Imy Berry gave three presentations in the Electronic Village: “3 Ways to Use a Corpus to Provoke Student-Directed Learning,” “Using Websites and Social Media Posts to Develop Critical Thinking Skills in Business Writing Students,” and “50 VLOG Prompts to Provoke Pronunciation Practice.” The last presentation was on her work with SPS’s Business Plus program.
