Thomas Cowan is Associate Director of the Center for Technology Management and on the faculty at Columbia University. This follows a career starting at IBM and then building software companies.
As a technologist, Cowan’s expertise is in the use of technology to create strategic differentiation, and in the leadership that is required to execute on strategic differentiation.
He rose through the leadership ranks to become CEO, board director, and chairman of ten companies and boards of directors, including public, private, nonprofit, and academic organizations.
He has served on the boards of OutlookSoft, Tivoli, Tagetik, PGA.com, and NHL.com. He has chaired audit, compensation, governance, and nominating committees. In addition, he has been Executive in Residence at RockRidge Capital Partners.
Cowan also serves as board director and chairman for a number of technology companies and is an advisor to investment firms and technology CEOs.
He is the author of From Idea to Business, Business Basics, and Leadership Basics. His academic background includes undergraduate work at Wake Forest University, an MBA from the University of South Carolina, and advanced studies at Columbia University.
