Why Is Technology So Addictive?

In a wide-ranging interview with Sustainability Management faculty Claudia Dreyfus, Adam Alter, the author of the new book Irresistible: The Rise of Addictive Technology and the Business of Keeping Us Hooked discussed both the psychological roots of addiction and how our behavioral addiction is changing the way we interact with people.

While Silicon Valley may be the source of our addictions, many high-level Silicon Valley executives make a point to shield their kids from technology and social media, a distinction that Alter found telling: “There’s a private school in the Bay Area and it doesn’t allow any tech — no iPhones or iPads. The really interesting thing about this school is that 75 percent of the parents are tech executives.”
