Prof. Claudia Dreifus Interviews SIPA Economist Scott Barrett

Professor Claudia Dreifus of the M.S. in Sustainability Management program is known for her wide-ranging interviews for The New York Times and elsewhere with renowned scientists, policymakers, and international figures. Most recently, she interviewed Scott Barrett, faculty member of Columbia's School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA).

The piece, featured in the Winter issue of Columbia Magazine, explored how Barrett uses game theory to predict global negotiations involving climate change. As an attendee at the 2015 United Nations climate change conference in Paris, Barrett further studied how global leaders are discussing environmental policy.

Dreifus’s interview pushes beyond global climate issues to discover what inspires Barrett’s work as an economist. Barrett said, “I’m an economist who tries to explain why international cooperation is needed, and when and why it succeeds or fails.”

Dreifus has been asking the hard questions for years. She has contributed to the New York Times, Smithsonian, AARP-The Magazine, and Scientific American.

She currently teaches Writing About Global Science for the International Media to students in the Sustainability Management graduate program.
