In Beijing, Domestic Workers Are Acting Out Their Tales

Cynthia Cooper, journalist, author, playwright, communications consultant, and professor in the Master of Science in Strategic Communications program at the School of Professional Studies, explores the conditions of domestic workers in Beijing in a recent article for Women’s eNews.

Cooper describes the work of Di Ding Hua, a theater group whose participants are all female domestic workers. Every Saturday, they gather to learn theater technique and to write and stage stories about their “bitterness and happiness,” as the founder of the group describes it. Explaining the challenges of rural women coming to the city to work as domestic workers, Cooper goes on to emphasize the value of Di Ding Hua in helping the women regain their self-confidence and question public stereotypes.
