Prof. Tom Richardson on Why Football Livestream Could Be a Game Changer

"The reality is we know cord-cutting is real … and at the same time some of the key sports have never been more popular," said Prof. Tom Richardson, who teaches in the graduate program in Sports Management. He was discussing the gradual migration of live football event broadcasts from cable television to online simulcasts, available at and elsewhere.

The shift will ultimately have an impact not only on sports channels such as ESPN but also sports advertisers, their agencies, and football fans. He said that the Thursday Night Football live stream was "a barometer, and each successive deal will be that much more advanced in terms of its sophistication and reach."
