Prof. Ray Katz Examines Cam Newton’s Advertising Success

Prof. Ray Katz of the Sports Management graduate program is quoted in the Sporting News article "Football's Michael Jordan? Cam Newton always had eyes on advertising prize." Katz offers an alternative perspective on Panthers quarterback Cam Newton’s rise to advertising fame and his potential for future sponsors:  

Corporate sponsors have been embarrassed too often in recent years by endorsers such as Lance Armstrong and [Tiger] Woods. Newton may scare off some sponsors as well as media. "I believe that his outspoken comments in general (including race) are far more concerning than his celebrations which are totally in the best possible spirit. . . . Corporate America is increasingly risk averse," Katz said.
