Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry. Some background with statistics is recommended but not required.
What is big data? What is machine learning? Participants in this course gain a hands-on understanding of these concepts, how they are shaping the world we live in, and how they can be applied to real-world business and social ventures.
The course focuses on the strategic use of data, through innovative technologies and strategies, to derive actionable business insights. Students gain a familiarity with fundamental data analytics concepts, learn techniques for harvesting big data, evaluate statistical models, and convert knowledge into action by effectively presenting data analytics in compelling narratives useful to organizations in decision-making.
In the process of designing and developing analytics solutions, students gain exposure to tools, technologies, and methodologies such as R, Tableau, MicroStrategy, augmented reality, and artificial intelligence.
In-class activities include lectures, small-group work, class discussions, guest speakers, and interactive case studies applying analytical concepts and methodologies.
Participants are required to bring laptops equipped with the Microsoft Office Suite.
Ivo Djoubrailov is a Teaching Associate for Columbia’s Master of Science program in Applied Analytics. His research interests span the fields of business intelligence, data analytics, and their effective applications for achieving positive business and social impact. In 2006 he founded Perun Business Group (PBG), a boutique consulting firm focused exclusively on implementing data management and analytics solutions across the federal government. Currently, in addition to running the business operations of PBG, Mr. Djoubrailov is pursuing his passion for teaching and research. In the classroom he combines academic knowledge with real-world business and consulting experience to deliver content-rich and engaging course materials that resonate with and inspire his students. He graduated magna cum laude from Virginia Tech and earned his Master of Science in applied analytics from Columbia University.
Nischitha Rao holds a bachelor's degree in finance and accounting and is a recent alumni of Columbia University’s Applied Analytics Master of Science program. She is a data enthusiast and believes in creating practical solutions to business problems using data. She helps organizations manage their data assets, sharing her expertise across different functions and thereby bridging the gap between business and technology. Ms. Rao has worked for Goldman Sachs as a risk analyst, developing metrics and analytical models for risk assessment. Currently she works as a data scientist for a consulting firm in New York City, where she is using R programming to retrieve, manipulate, and understand open source data and develop price optimization models. She is passionate about leveraging technology in the classroom and applying innovative tools and methodologies so as to improve educational outcomes.
