Kevin Madigan, Ph.D., ACAS, CERA, MAAA works as a consulting actuary at one of the world’s leading professional services firms. He has more than twenty years of experience as an actuary and underwriter, working in various roles at insurers, reinsurers, and consulting firms. Risk modeling and Enterprise Risk Management have been central to each of the roles Madigan has held since 1995, including optimizing insurance liability portfolios; building economic capital models; underwriting, pricing, and managing natural catastrophe risk and other insurance risk; actuarial modernization; advising companies on the design and implementation of ERM frameworks; ERM support of M&A activity; incorporating the management of cyber risk into ERM frameworks; and the proper use of dynamic risk models in strategic decision making. Prior to 1995, he served in academic capacities at Lamar University and Northwestern University.
Widely known as an insurance ERM expert, Madigan is a frequent writer and speaker on many topics, and has been an active volunteer in actuarial organizations throughout his career. His current volunteer activities include chairing the Risk Management Committee for the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS). His prior service on industry committees is deep and varied, notably serving as vice-chair and chair of the Joint Risk Management Section’s ERM Symposium Program Committee, jointly run by the CAS, the Canadian Institute of Actuaries, and the Society of Actuaries; as a member of the ERM Committee of the Actuarial Standards Board, which wrote the first Actuarial Standards of Practice for ERM; as a member of the CAS Nominating Committee; as the program committee chair for the Casualty Actuarial Society (CAS) Seminar “ERM for the P&C Actuary”; serving as Secretary of the CAS Enterprise Risk Management Special Interest Section; and as a member of the ERM/ORSA Committee of the American Academy of Actuaries (AAA).
Madigan has authored numerous articles for publications such as the CAS Forum, Risk Management and Insurance Review, Carrier Management, AIROC Matters, Actuarial Review, and SAS White Paper. His mathematical research has appeared in Transactions of the American Mathematical Society and Proceedings of the American Mathematical Society.
Madigan earned a Ph.D. and an M.A. in Mathematics from the University at Albany, SUNY, and a B.S. in Mathematics from Auburn University. He is an Associate of the Casualty Actuarial Society, a Charted Enterprise Risk Analyst, and a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries.
