Kirsten Plonner is director of strategic media and communications for the Workplace Investing business of Fidelity Investments. She works closely with Fidelity executives to design and support external media relations strategy, implementation, and outreach for key workplace priorities, including 401(k), thought leadership, health and wellness and managed accounts, among others.
In addition to her full-time duties at Fidelity, she is also an adjunct instructor at Columbia University where she teaches Corporate Communications to graduate students and advises Masters candidates on their theses.
She was previously vice president in the Lead Media group at Weber Shandwick, where she was responsible for guiding strategic communications and counsel to inform her clients’ internal and external narrative, as well as implementing high-profile media relations and strategy. Client work included TIAA-CREF, Bank of America, MasterCard, ADP, Samsung, Ingersoll Rand, and Royal Caribbean, among others.
Prior to joining Weber Shandwick, Plonner was vice president in Fleishman-Hillard’s corporate business-to-business group in New York. Clients included Nationwide Insurance, RSM McGladrey and Ernst & Young, among others. During her tenure, she provided extensive media relations support and strategic counsel for non-profits and government agencies, such as Common Ground, New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services, New York City Department of Homeless Services, and the Cayman Islands Portfolio of Finance and Economics.
She previously specialized in media relations for clients and projects at RF|Binder, a member of the Ruder-Finn group. Clients included Bank of America, Friends of the High Line, life sciences company Cylex, Eli Lilly, Ranbaxy Pharmaceuticals, and Wines of Chile.
Plonner began her career in journalism as a producer at CNBC’s Global Headquarters in New York. She was responsible for producing elements for the political Washington D.C.-based show Capital Report. She also frequently covered breaking and ongoing political news for the network.
In addition, she worked in the capacity of assistant to the correspondent for NBC at the United Nations, Linda Fasulo. She served as senior researcher for Ms. Fasulo’s book, Insider’s Guide to the U.N. (Yale University Press, 2003). In these roles, she gained hands-on experience interviewing major U.N. officials and diplomats, writing and editing book copy and breaking news updates, as well as researching and covering daily and breaking news for NBC.
Plonner has a Master of Science in Strategic Communications from Columbia University. She received her B.S. in Telecommunications and her B.A. in History from the University of Florida.
