Kevin Sweeney's areas of academic interest are global management and strategy, corporate finance, international corporate transactions and corporate entrepreneurship. Kevin has about 23 years of global business, academic and legal experience in finance, strategy, economic development and corporate M&A. His international business background has influenced his cross-functional focus on global business operations, and his academic experience has drawn on influences from a variety of disciplines, including finance, management, strategy, economics, political science, and law.
In addition to his teaching with Columbia University, Kevin is a full-time Professor of Practice with the School of Business of Worcester Polytechnic Institute, specializing in Finance. He is also the Principal of Sweeney Strategic Consulting, where he advises for-profit and nonprofit organizations regarding critical finance, strategic and operational decisions.
Kevin serves on the Board of Directors of Westfield Financial, Inc. (WFD). WFD is a NASDAQ traded firm that operates as a bank holding company for Westfield Bank – a federally chartered stock savings bank that provides various community banking products and services to businesses and individuals in Massachusetts. He is also a Director of Common Capital, a private Community Development Financial Institution with a mission to strengthen Western and Central Massachusetts by funding small businesses, and he is a member of the Advisory Board of the Scibelli Enterprise Center, home of the SEC Business Incubator in Springfield, Massachusetts. Finally, Kevin is the President of the Board of Directors of the Springfield Technical Community College Foundation in Springfield, Massachusetts.
In 2012, Kevin served in an interim appointment as the President and Chief Executive Officer of DevelopSpringfield in Springfield, Massachusetts. Prior to that, Kevin spent 19 years with the MassMutual Financial Group, where he was most recently a Managing Director of MassMutual Capital Partners LLC. He was responsible for strategic mergers and acquisitions, private equity investments, and other transactions for MassMutual and its affiliated companies.
Kevin has also been a Senior Lecturer with Western New England University College of Business, where he taught Business Strategy and Corporate Entrepreneurship, and he has been an Adjunct Professor of Law at the Western New University School of Law, where he taught Mergers and Acquisitions.
Kevin received his M.B.A. jointly from New York University Stern School of Business, the London School of Economics & Political Science, and the HEC School of Management in Paris as a graduate of TRIUM. Kevin received his Doctor of Law from the University of Wisconsin Law School and his B.A. from the University of Massachusetts – Amherst. Kevin also attended the AACSB Bridge Program at the University of California – Merage School of Business in Irvine, California. The Bridge Program certifies senior-level executives to serve as "professionally qualified" business school faculty consistent with AACSB accreditation standards.
