English for Professional Purposes: Social Work (Fall)
This part-time course is designed to help non-native users of English better equip themselves for graduate study in Social Work at Columbia by enhancing their English language proficiency in speaking, reading, writing, and listening comprehension; there is an emphasis on improving students' academic writing skills. There is a dual aim of preparing students for both their studies and their fieldwork positions. Using themes which are at the core of this discipline, the instructors have designed classes, readings, presentations, audio material, class visitors and trips around the goal of honing students’ English language and communication skills. Special focus will be placed on familiarizing students with the vocabulary used in social work, in grammatical accuracy in speaking and writing, in improving comprehensibility (pronunciation, stress, intonation), and in general writing skills needed for graduate-level coursework.
This course is only open to international students who are enrolled at the Columbia University School of Social Work (CUSSW). Students required to take this course will be notified by CUSSW. It is only offered in the Fall semester
